The Science & Technology group meet to discuss subject of interest to the group members ranging from cosmology to particle physics, and climate change to neuro divergence. Our wide ranging discussion aim to increase our appreciation & understanding over the whole field from historical scientific discoveries to topical technological development and challenges. We also hold trips to local sites of scientific & technical interest.
Meetings are typically 1.5 to 2 hours, with a discussion lead by one of the members on a science or technology related subject. Which is typically followed by a more informal conversation regarding topical science and technology issues.
Topics for past meeting have include:-
- The Ignoble prize "honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think."
- The scientific discoveries relating to effects on the brain of long-term meditation looking mainly at Buddhist monks.
- The Riemann hypothesis which many consider it to be the most important unsolved problem in pure mathematics.
- The Big Bang: how the concept developed over time, and a few possible (and contentious!) directions for its future development.
- A visit to The British Engineerium
- Artificial Intelligence
- A visit to Rampion Wind Farm; See the video https://youtu.be/AlTDvhL_m8M
- Stopping the Dominoes - Preventing large-scale power grid failure
If you have a broad interest in Science & Technology or a specific area of expertise to explore with us, why not come to one of meetings on the third Tuesday of each month.
